PERMAI GARDENS PENANG

Nestled amongst the lush greenery and located in the heart of Tanjung Bunga, lies a gem like no other; the ever privately exclusive Permai Gardens; an impressive brainchild from renowned developer – BSG. Crafted brilliantly by reinventing contemporary lifestyle, allowing you access to complete solitude, yet keeping you amidst a like-minded sense of community.

Reliving the beauty of community life, yet not at the expense of privacy is the core at Permai Garden's concept. The gated community set up ensures security from the world outside, whereas the clever use of layout and structure gives you your own private space in at home. This does not however suffer the element of camaraderie amongst your neighbours, eliminating the use of fences and gates, replacing it with strong ties and close bonds, just like the good old days.
Expected completion : 2013
We have individual units of sub sale

STREETS OF GEORGETOWN - PREWAR

Streets of Georgetown

Prewar houses @ Stewart Lane
In July 2008, Penang (Georgetown) became a designated UNESCO Heritage Site (together with Malacca), thanks to the efforts of conservationist who have worked tirelessly to preserve Penang , the historical parts as they are and have been. This should prevent further demolition of historical homes and sites to make way for modern and tall buildings and a reminder to Penangites and visitors alike how lucky we are in fact to be able to visit or live in a historical site which is still thriving as it was before, okay – plus a few minor adjustments to modernisation. There is still some work to be done on the side of the Penangites and the local government, to restore dilapidated buildings, preventing further pollution and congestion in the historical parts of Penang and keeping the areas clean.

Pathway between the prewar houses
The most intense part of Georgetown that reminds you well why it was awarded the UNESCO Heritage Site in the first place , is the older part of Georgetown, close to the port. (Weld Quay). Penang has been a port since time immemorial, where traders from near and far have docked and traded. As such you see a cacophony of people, some settling down and eventually became local Penangites. You have Armenians, Jews, Arabs, Indians, Sumaterans, Jawanese, Chinese , Dutch, Portugese and English to  name a few who have ventured to Penang and made her their home.

Airwells typical in the prewar houses
Sir Francis Light accordingly in the history books, has been rather pivotal in the development of Penang as a trading port. He ‘founded’ Penang 1786. He moved his famil from Thailand (then Siam) to Penang and died there in 1794 from malaria. You can find his tomb and statue in the Protestant Cemetery at Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah (Northam Road).

One of Dr. Sun Yat Sen’s base in Penang
With that development, the building and heritage sites you find in Penang are such mix blend of architectures – it is as precious as Venice. I hope it will never be neglected lest the future generations will never come to know of their hometown’s  rich and unique history.
The most interesting area is downtown Georgetown – from Beach Street, Church Street Armenian Street, Muntri Street, King and Queen Street – stretching all the way to Light Street and Penang Street. See Map below:

Penang was also a major stronghold of the Peranakans (nyonyas and babas) and Mamaks (Indian Muslims, Indians originating from the Southern part of India) besides the local Malays and Chinese Hokkiens and to a degree Eurasians and Jews. This rich fusion of cultures quite likely has made Penang  a food paradise. As time passes, Penang became well known for her cuisine and hawker street foods and mamak stalls – reflecting the lifestyle of her forefathers, the settlers – quite unchanged, fast food for the common people, this food heritage grew, so much so, Penang was and is known first and foremost for her food, later the beaches and lately now her heritage too.

Typical finishing of the facade, patterned tiles
And if you are already at Weld Quay, you must not forget to pop into the Jetty Clans, where chinese settlers divided into clans lived on houses built on stilts sprawled out to the sea. Each clan (according to their surnames) are accorded a part of the jetty to build their homes. They still live there until today.

PENANG PREWAR

Penang will have its very own Chinatown pretty soon. According to The Star, PENANG’S UNESCO world heritage site will soon boast of having the country’s first ‘cultural hotel’.

Property owner K.H. Seah said three pre-war houses along Jalan Pintal Tali would be restored and re-opened as a high-end hotel to be named ‘1881 Chong Tian Cultural Hotel’.

These triple-storey buildings, which have been around for over a century, is located where the area will be developed as Penang’s Chinatown.

Big plans: The three pre-war houses along Jalan Pintal Tali will be restored and reopened as a high-end hotel to be named ‘1881 Chong Tian Cultural Hotel’

Penang already has Little India and the Malay Kapitan heritage enclaves here but no Chinatown. Work on the cultural hotel will start at the end of the month and is expected to complete by the end of the year.

The cultural hotel would have a library, mini cafe and museum featuring extensive antique collections dating back to the 18th century. The library resources and exhibition area will be open and free to everyone.

Priceless piece: The intricately carved wooden door in one of the three houses will be preserved.

The Seven Streets Precinct, or Chit Tiau Lor in Hokkien, is an area in George Town immediately south of the Prangin Canal. This triangular piece of land is anchored by Magazine Circus to the northwest, the junction of Anson Bridge to the northeast, and Sungai Pinang Bridge to the south.

For much of the 19th century, the area was a collection of Chinese villages, with Koay Kangnga ("Across the River") being the settlement closest to the Prangin Canal. Beach Street continues south in the form of a country path that meandered along the coast towards the plantations in Gelugor and Batu Lanchang (by the way, "Batu Lanchang" in the 19th century refers to much of what is Green Lane today).

Living in the Seven Streets Precinct area (it wasn't called that yet) were Hokkiens who worshipped at temples such as the Seng Ong Beow Temple, at that time surrounded by mangrove, somewhere between land and sea. The kampung houses within that area were not arranged in any particular order - it is similar to the kampungs we see today, with clusters of houses interrupted by vegetable plots. The settlers, mostly farmers, sent their produce to the Prangin Canal, where they are loaded to boats and distributed elsewhere in town. Similarly, fish and imported goods come in through the canal and are sent to godowns and sundry shops.

Penang actually became more prosperous from the 4th quarter of the 19th century, when tin mining in Perak propelled an economic boom which even the repeated clan warfares could not derail. There was an influx of immigrants from China, the poor to work in the tin mines and the harbour - where much workforce was needed to load and unload tin and later rubber, the middle class setting up provision shops and retail businesses, while the upper class owning tin mines and were the main benefactors of the clan associations and builders of ornate clan temples.

The houses within the Seven Streets Precinct that we see today were built around the late 19th century. The burgeoning population induced the development of George Town to spill south across the Prangin Canal. The vegetable farms had to make way for roads. These were quickly laid out as seven parallel streets framed by two main roads, to be named Bridge Street (now Jalan C.Y. Choy) and Brick Kiln Road (now Jalan Gurdwara), and the Prangin Canal at the northern end. The houses that were put up were of bricks, certainly more durable than the attap and wood sheds that they replaced. The seven parallel streets were Magazine Road, Presgrave Street, Tye Sin Street, Macallum Street, Katz Street and Cecil Street. To these were added Peking Road (which is almost disappeared), Nanking Road, Herriot Street and Sandilands Streets. Running right through the Seven Streets Precinct, like a fishbone, is McNair Street.

The Seven Streets Precinct has all along been a working class neighbourhood. Even before the brickhouses were built, it was a no-man's land to the gentrified Baba Nyonyas, a place where clan warfares and triad activities were rampant. So it was until as late as the 1970's and early 80's.

The Seven Streets Precinct was originally earmarked to be included within George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site. However, the size of the core and buffer zones were subsequently reduced in area to what it is eventually inscribed.
